Italy’s fourth largest lake. From the waterfront at Passignano sul Trasimeno, boats cross to Isola Maggiore, a small island village with quiet lakeside paths. You can also swim from the lakeside at Tuoro or hire a boat at Passignano. An easy half day, or a long lunch by the water.

A Tuscan hill town of steep lanes and Etruscan walls. See the Etruscan finds at the MAEC museum, paintings by Fra Angelico at the Diocesan Museum, and the evening passeggiata in Piazza della Repubblica.

A medieval stone town in the hills of northern Umbria. Palazzo dei Consoli holds the Eugubine Tablets, and a cable car climbs Monte Ingino to the Basilica of Sant’Ubaldo. The Festa dei Ceri is held every year on 15 May.

Piazza del Campo, the cathedral and the museums of the historic centre. The drive makes Siena a full day out rather than a quick visit. The Palio is run on 2 July and 16 August.

A longer excursion. Central Rome is about three hours each way by car, so it is best planned as a full day or an overnight stay. Traffic is restricted in the historic centre, so many visitors park outside it and continue by public transport.
